Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur has leapt to the defense of Lewis Hamilton in a passionate and expletive-laden response to growing criticism of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s early-season performance. Amid mounting questions about whether Hamilton’s form has declined, Vasseur made it clear: the doubts are “fing bulls“, and the British driver has his full, unwavering support.

Hamilton, who made headlines during the off-season with a blockbuster move from Mercedes to Ferrari, has endured a rough start to the 2025 campaign. The 39-year-old finished a disappointing seventh at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, trailing significantly behind his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, who has consistently shown stronger pace across the opening rounds.

During a tense media briefing in Jeddah following qualifying, a question about Hamilton’s form struck a nerve with Vasseur, who immediately dismissed suggestions that the veteran was underperforming. Instead, he praised Hamilton’s efforts and emphasized his commitment to helping him get back on form.

“I’m behind Lewis 2,000 per cent,” Vasseur said firmly. “We’re going to sit down first thing tomorrow morning, go through everything, and start working on the issues straight away. The potential is absolutely there, and I’m not concerned in the slightest.”

Hamilton himself has been candid about his struggles, openly admitting that he doesn’t fully understand why he’s been unable to match Leclerc’s pace. After another frustrating weekend in Saudi Arabia, the Brit said he felt like the problems with the car may persist for the foreseeable future, acknowledging that there is no clear solution yet.

Despite this, Vasseur remains optimistic. He pointed to Hamilton’s performances in Bahrain and China, where he showed glimpses of competitive pace — particularly during the early parts of race weekends — as evidence that the underlying speed is there.

“If you look at Bahrain, China, or even the early stages of practice this weekend, Lewis had strong moments,” Vasseur continued. “The challenge right now is understanding the balance of the car and how it’s working with the tires. That’s something we’re all working on — not just Lewis alone. It’s a collective issue.”

The Ferrari boss also emphasized that the team believes in Hamilton’s talent and experience, and they see his current issues as technical — not personal or performance-based.

“It’s not about Lewis being off the pace, it’s about finding harmony between him and the car. Right now, we’re in a difficult phase, but that doesn’t mean we’ve lost confidence. Quite the opposite — we’re even more motivated to fix it together.”

Hamilton’s rough start to the 2025 season is drawing comparisons to 2009 — one of the worst opening stretches of his career — when he scored points in just three of the first nine races during a disappointing title defense with McLaren. However, his track record shows he’s no stranger to adversity, and Vasseur believes that with the right adjustments, the results will come.

What’s Next for Hamilton and Ferrari?

As the F1 circus rolls into its next destination, all eyes will be on how Ferrari and Hamilton respond. The team will be digging deep into telemetry and feedback over the coming days in an effort to unlock performance from Hamilton’s SF-25 chassis, which so far seems better suited to Leclerc’s driving style.

While fans and pundits continue to speculate about whether Hamilton’s best days are behind him, Vasseur’s explosive defense sends a clear message: the team still sees him as a vital part of their championship ambitions.

“This isn’t about pointing fingers or panicking,” Vasseur said. “It’s about pushing together as a team. Lewis has been in this game long enough. He knows how to bounce back — and we’re going to help him do just that.”
