Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert has taken aim at Max Verstappen for what he called “disrespectful” behavior during the podium ceremony following the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver had finished the race in second place after receiving a five-second penalty for going off track and gaining an advantage during a battle with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Despite Red Bull’s appeal and submission of photo evidence, the stewards upheld the penalty, allowing Piastri to take the win and move into the lead of the championship standings.

Herbert expressed disappointment with how Verstappen handled the situation during the post-race celebrations, urging drivers to maintain respect and composure regardless of the outcome. “Drivers must show professionalism and respect, especially on the podium,” Herbert remarked.

This isn’t the first time Herbert has clashed with Verstappen. In 2024, he criticized Verstappen’s aggressive approach at the Mexican Grand Prix, calling it part of a “toxic mindset.” Verstappen and his father, Jos, pushed back, accusing Herbert of being biased. The controversy led to the FIA ending Herbert’s role as a race steward, citing a conflict between his media work and officiating responsibilities.

Verstappen remains under scrutiny not just for his racing tactics, but also for how he conducts himself off the track—ensuring he stays a hot topic in the world of Formula 1 as the season continues.
