Kimi Antonelli will lead the field in Saturday’s Sprint Race at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix after clinching a sensational pole position — the first of his budding Formula 1 career. Driving for Mercedes, the 18-year-old not only took the top spot in Sprint Qualifying but also shattered multiple records along the way. Antonelli is now the youngest driver in F1 history to start from pole in any race format, eclipsing Sebastian Vettel’s previous record by a significant two and a half years.
In a remarkable performance, Antonelli topped the session at a track he had never previously raced on, finishing with a lap time of 1:26.482. The young Italian outpaced both McLaren drivers, championship leader Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who will start second and third respectively. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, had a relatively quiet session and will begin from fourth.
George Russell, Antonelli’s teammate at Mercedes, secured fifth but was unable to match the raw pace of the young debutant. Behind him, Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton locked out sixth and seventh on the grid. Hamilton, still adjusting to life at Ferrari and the unpredictable SF-25 car, continues to show signs of frustration, especially as he watches his former team thrive with a rising star at the helm.
Rounding out the top ten are Alex Albon in the Williams, Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar, and Aston Martin veteran Fernando Alonso.
