F1 Penalty Points: Red Bull Star Edges Closer to Race Ban
Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Perez is walking a tightrope after accumulating more penalty points on his FIA super licence, edging dangerously close to a potential race ban.
Following a series of on-track infractions this season, the Mexican driver now holds 10 penalty points, just two short of the 12-point threshold that would trigger an automatic one-race suspension. The points have been collected over the past 12 months, with the latest added after a controversial incident at the Miami Grand Prix, where Perez was deemed at fault for causing a collision with an Alpine.
FIA stewards have cracked down in recent seasons on driving standards, and while most drivers keep their points totals low, Perez’s tally has steadily climbed due to repeated warnings for track limits, impeding, and avoidable contact.
Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner expressed concern:
“Of course we’re keeping an eye on the situation. Sergio needs to be clean and cautious in the next few races — the team can’t afford a forced absence with the championship fight this tight.”
If Perez were to receive two more penalty points before any of the current ones expire, he would become the first driver since Romain Grosjean in 2012 to serve a race ban for on-track behavior.
The pressure is now firmly on Perez to drive cleanly in the upcoming Grands Prix and avoid any further stewards’ penalties.
