Track limits violations impact multiple drivers as Verstappen and Antonelli face further frustration during Miami Grand Prix weekend
The FIA has officially confirmed several lap time deletions from the sprint race at the Miami Grand Prix, with drivers from top teams including Red Bull and Mercedes penalised for exceeding track limits.
The ruling came after a chaotic sprint session that saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finish in last place following a 10-second penalty for an unsafe pit release that nearly caused a collision with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli. Verstappen’s woes continued as one of his lap times was removed for leaving the track at Turn 11.
Mercedes had its share of misfortune as well. Antonelli, who made history by becoming the youngest driver ever to claim pole position in any F1 format, lost ground early in the sprint and eventually had a lap time deleted for a violation at Turn 15.
The FIA revealed that four drivers in total failed to stay within track boundaries during the session. Among them were:
Max Verstappen (Red Bull)– Exceeded track limits at Turn 11
Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) – Ran off at Turn 15
Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull)– Had his 1:39.140 lap deleted for crossing track limits at Turn 15
Jack Doohan (Alpine)– Left the circuit at Turn 11
Carlos Sainz (Williams)– Deleted time for exceeding limits at Turn 17 before crashing out of the race
These penalties come as a blow to teams already struggling to keep up with McLaren’s dominant pace. Verstappen, in particular, faces a difficult challenge in Sunday’s Grand Prix as he looks to recover from a string of setbacks.
As the FIA continues to strictly enforce track boundaries, teams and drivers will need to exercise even greater precision on race day.
