McLaren Issue Verdict on Norris vs. Piastri After Thrilling V…read more

In the wake of an electrifying Miami Grand Prix, McLaren has delivered its verdict on the growing intra-team rivalry between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The team was quick to praise both drivers after Norris claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory following a fierce battle with Max Verstappen, while Piastri impressed with his aggressive start and early skirmishes at the front.

The Miami race marked a breakthrough moment for McLaren, with Norris taking advantage of a well-timed safety car and showing composure under pressure to hold off Verstappen — no easy task. Meanwhile, Piastri had been running in podium contention before contact with Carlos Sainz dropped him down the order, ultimately compromising what had been a strong weekend for the young Australian.

Team Principal Andrea Stella addressed the performance and the evolving dynamic between Norris and Piastri:

“We are incredibly proud of both our drivers. Lando delivered an outstanding win, but Oscar’s role was also critical. His pace in the first stint and his ability to challenge Verstappen early on played a key role in creating the opportunity for Lando. They’re both pushing each other, which is exactly what we want — but in a healthy, respectful way.”

Stella dismissed any suggestions of internal conflict between the two, instead highlighting the strength of having two competitive drivers working in unison.

“It’s natural for talented drivers to want to outperform each other, but that competitiveness is balanced by teamwork. They understand the bigger picture — we’re on the rise, and their collaboration is central to that.”

Sources within the team say McLaren has been closely managing strategy and communication to ensure fairness and transparency between both garages. The Miami result, which ended Norris’s long wait for a first F1 win, is seen internally as a validation of the team’s development progress and the maturity of its driver lineup.

With momentum on their side, McLaren now looks ahead to the next round at Imola, aiming to consolidate their position in the Constructors’ Championship and prove that Miami was no one-off.
