FIA Releases Official Statement Over Disqualification of Red Bull’s… Read More
The FIA has officially dismissed Red Bull Racing’s protest against Mercedes driver George Russell following the contentious events of the 2025 Miami Grand Prix. In a detailed statement released Monday evening, motorsport’s governing body confirmed that there was no rule infringement by Russell during the race, and therefore, the results will stand as originally declared.
Red Bull filed the protest after claiming Russell gained an unfair advantage during a late-race incident with their driver Sergio Perez. The team argued that Russell exceeded track limits while defending his position and failed to return the advantage, possibly costing Perez a higher points finish.
However, after extensive review of all relevant data—including onboard footage, race telemetry, and team radio communications—the stewards concluded that Russell’s actions fell within the regulations.
“After careful examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident in question, the Stewards find no breach of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations by car #63 (George Russell),” the official statement read. “The protest lodged by Oracle Red Bull Racing is therefore dismissed, and the classification of the 2025 Miami Grand Prix remains unchanged.”
The decision was met with frustration from the Red Bull camp, who felt their protest was warranted given what they believed was a clear example of unfair racing conduct. Team Principal Christian Horner expressed disappointment but accepted the ruling, stating:
“We believed we had a strong case based on the data and what we observed during the race. Ultimately, the FIA saw it differently. We respect the decision, though it’s a tough one to take given how tight the championship is shaping up to be.”
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, meanwhile, defended his driver and welcomed the FIA’s decision.
“George raced hard but fair. We’re pleased that the FIA confirmed there was no wrongdoing, and we can now move forward and focus on the next race,” said Wolff.
With the Miami GP results standing, Russell retains his position and points finish, which further tightens the battle in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. Perez, meanwhile, loses the opportunity to close the gap on teammate Max Verstappen, who also had a difficult outing in Miami.
The controversy adds another layer to what is already proving to be one of the most dramatic and competitive seasons in recent Formula 1 history. The next round of the championship heads to Imola, where tensions—and stakes—will no doubt be high once again.
