Carlos Sainz Sr. Could Challenge Ben Sulayem in FIA Presidential Race

Carlos Sainz Sr., a two-time World Rally Champion and the father of F1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr., is reportedly being considered as a candidate to run for the FIA presidency later this year. According to Sky Sports News, the Spaniard may go head-to-head with current president Mohammed Ben Sulayem in the upcoming December election.

At 63, Sainz Sr. is believed to have strong backing from key figures across various motorsport disciplines governed by the FIA. Despite his son’s active involvement in Formula 1, potential concerns about conflicts of interest are reportedly minimal. Should any decisions arise that could impact F1 competition, Sainz is expected to delegate those matters appropriately.

Supporters view Sainz as a leader with integrity and a collaborative mindset—qualities that stand in contrast to growing criticisms of Ben Sulayem’s leadership. The current president, elected in 2021, has faced increasing scrutiny, especially following the resignation of FIA deputy president for sport Robert Reid, who publicly questioned the direction of the organization.

At the same time, Formula 1 drivers have been pushing for greater influence in the FIA’s decision-making. Lewis Hamilton, speaking during the Miami Grand Prix, emphasized that the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) should have more authority within the sport’s governance. He suggested the drivers’ voices often go unheard and advocated for a more cooperative relationship with FIA leadership.

Sainz Sr. is seen by many as someone who could restore confidence and bring a driver-focused perspective to the FIA, potentially signaling a significant shift in leadership if he decides to formally enter the race.
