Sergio Perez in Talks with Alpine for 2026 F1 Return

Former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has reportedly opened discussions with Alpine about a potential return to Formula 1 in 2026. After taking a sabbatical this season following his departure from Red Bull at the end of 2024, Perez is actively exploring options for a comeback—should the right project arise.

While Perez has been heavily linked with the upcoming Cadillac F1 entry—whose advisor Mario Andretti recently hinted at Perez being a top candidate for a 2026 seat—a new suitor has now emerged. According to *The Race*, representatives of the six-time grand prix winner met with Alpine boss Flavio Briatore during the Miami Grand Prix weekend to discuss possible opportunities with the Enstone-based squad.

Though Alpine is reportedly open to the idea of signing Perez, he is not currently their leading candidate. However, the appeal of joining a more established and potentially competitive team like Alpine may be tempting for the Mexican, particularly in contrast to the risks associated with a brand-new project like Cadillac.

Adding weight to the speculation is the presence of Perez’s long-time financial backer, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, who was also seen in Miami. Sources suggest Slim is actively involved in negotiating Perez’s F1 return. Still, he may also pivot support to rising Argentine talent Franco Colapinto, should Alpine favor the rookie as their future prospect.

Alpine has temporarily sidelined Jack Doohan for the next six races to evaluate Colapinto, who has only nine F1 starts to date, indicating that the team’s 2026 driver lineup remains very much in flux.

Perez’s return could bring valuable experience to Alpine, especially as they look to rebuild amid recent restructuring efforts. Whether he chooses the security of Alpine or the fresh challenge with Cadillac may ultimately come down to which project offers the stronger long-term vision.
