Breaking: FIA launches investigation into Verstappen following incident with Hamilton…read more
Monaco – May 10, 2025 — The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has officially opened an investigation into reigning Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen following a controversial incident involving seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton during the Monaco Grand Prix.
The incident occurred on lap 32 of the race when Hamilton attempted an overtaking move on Verstappen heading into the Nouvelle Chicane. Verstappen, defending his position, appeared to veer slightly across the track, forcing Hamilton onto the kerbs and nearly into the barriers. The close call sparked immediate reactions from fans, commentators, and team principals alike, with many accusing Verstappen of “unsportsmanlike conduct.”
Race stewards initially reviewed the footage during the race and opted against penalizing either driver. However, following post-race protests from Mercedes and increased scrutiny from analysts and fans, the FIA has decided to take a closer look at the incident.
In a statement released late Sunday evening, the FIA said, “In light of new evidence and onboard footage, the FIA has launched an official review into the actions of Car #1 driven by Max Verstappen during the Monaco Grand Prix. The goal is to ensure compliance with racing regulations and the safety of all drivers.”
Red Bull Racing has responded swiftly, defending Verstappen’s maneuver as “firm but fair” and calling the investigation “unnecessary.” Team principal Christian Horner stated, “Max has always raced hard, and that’s what fans love about him. There was nothing malicious—just classic wheel-to-wheel action.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton remained calm in post-race interviews but hinted that “some drivers feel they’re above the rules.”
The outcome of the FIA’s investigation could have significant implications for the championship standings, especially if penalties are applied retroactively. Verstappen currently leads the championship by 12 points, with Hamilton gaining momentum after recent performances.
A decision is expected within the next 72 hours.
