F1 Hopeful Dirk Schouten Provides Health Update After Violent Spa Crash
Dutch racing driver Dirk Schouten has spoken publicly for the first time following a terrifying high-speed crash during the opening round of the 2025 Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland at Spa-Francorchamps. The 24-year-old lost control in a congested section of the track, slamming into the barriers at around 150 km/h after veering off the racing line.
The incident occurred as several cars battled for position heading into a corner with minimal grip and little space to maneuver. Schouten’s vehicle skidded through the gravel and struck the barriers hard. Fortunately, he was able to exit the wreck with assistance from track marshals and was taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary checks.
In a video shared from his hospital bed, where he wore a neck brace, Schouten reassured fans about his condition and recounted the frightening moment.
“I hit the wall almost instantly after going off. It was a scary moment,” he said. “I’m doing pretty well now and really appreciate all the care I received.”
Schouten also criticized what he described as overly aggressive driving by other competitors, citing poor decision-making in the high-speed Blanchimont section of the track.
“Trying to go through Blanchimont five-wide just isn’t safe,” he added. “Those who went off track should’ve backed off earlier there was no room.”
While still dealing with pain in his knees and difficulty walking, Schouten expressed gratitude for the swift medical response and support from the motorsport community.
The crash occurred during a support race for the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship’s 6 Hours of Spa, which also saw Ferrari secure their third WEC victory of the season. Schouten’s recovery will be closely monitored as he aims to return to racing when fully fit.
