Dirk Schouten Issues Health Update After High-Speed Crash at Spa
Dutch racing driver Dirk Schouten has shared an update on his condition following a terrifying crash during the opening round of the 2025 Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. The 24-year-old was involved in a serious accident at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, one of the most challenging tracks in motorsport. The incident occurred during a particularly hectic section of the race, as several cars battled closely for position.
As the tightly grouped field approached a fast corner, Schouten was left with little room to navigate. With limited grip and no clear path ahead, his car veered off the racing line and skidded across the gravel trap at approximately 150 km/h (about 93 mph). The car then slammed into the barriers in a brutal impact, drawing immediate concern from onlookers and race officials.
Despite the force of the collision, Schouten was conscious and able to exit the mangled vehicle with the help of track marshals and medical personnel stationed nearby. He was quickly transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. A video later surfaced showing the young driver in a hospital bed wearing a neck brace—a precautionary measure typically used in motorsport incidents involving possible spinal strain.
In the video message, Schouten assured fans and followers of his condition, stating, “When I went off track, I hit the wall almost instantly. It was really frightening. But I’m doing quite well, and I want to thank everyone who has taken care of me.”
Reflecting on the incident, Schouten expressed concern about the risky decisions made by fellow competitors during the race. “From my point of view, the cars that went off the track should have backed off earlier,” he said. “Going through Blanchimont five-wide just isn’t realistic. When you leave the track at that speed, you simply can’t make the corner safely.”
Schouten also revealed that he experienced considerable pain in his knees following the crash, which initially made walking difficult. However, he expressed deep gratitude toward the medical team for their quick and effective response, which helped stabilize him and prevent further complications.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland event took place as a support race for the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship’s 6 Hours of Spa, a key fixture on the endurance racing calendar. While Ferrari celebrated their third victory of the WEC season during the same weekend, Schouten’s accident served as a sobering reminder of the dangers drivers face each time they step into the cockpit.
Though visibly shaken by the experience, Schouten’s update has brought relief to fans and members of the racing community who had feared a more serious outcome. His recovery journey will be closely followed, with many hoping to see the resilient young Dutchman back on the grid once he has made a full recovery.
