Sergio Perez Advised to Reject Cadillac for Alpine as F1 Future Hangs in the Balance
As Sergio Perez weighs his Formula 1 options post-Red Bull, he’s being encouraged to steer clear of Cadillac and instead pursue a seat at Alpine on a move considered more practical for the next phase of his career.
The Mexican driver is reportedly high on Cadillac’s wish list as the American outfit prepares to enter F1 in 2026 with Andretti. However, former F1 star Juan Pablo Montoya believes Alpine presents a more logical and competitive option, especially if Perez is only planning to stay in the sport for a few more years.
“If Sergio Perez can land a seat at Alpine next year, that would be a far better move than going to Cadillac,” Montoya told Sites de Apostas. “If he’s looking at one or two more seasons before retiring, Alpine just makes much more sense.”
Montoya’s comments come amid reports that Alpine is considering changes to its driver lineup, having signed Franco Colapinto to a limited five-race contract. This has led to speculation that Alpine could be keeping a seat open for a more experienced driver like Perez, depending on Colapinto’s performance.
“It’s a tricky situation with Colapinto,” Montoya added. “But if Perez wants to stay in F1 with a more stable and proven team, Alpine is the better fit.”
Perez has remained open about his future, stating earlier this year that he would make a decision within six months. He recently reiterated that he’s looking for the right opportunity — one that values his experience and offers a serious project.
“If I find a project that truly motivates me — where the team believes in me and appreciates my experience and what I bring — that would be very appealing,” Perez told F1.com.
While Cadillac’s 2026 debut is generating buzz, the team remains an unknown quantity on the grid. Alpine, by contrast, offers an established infrastructure and a clearer path to competitiveness, despite recent struggles.
Montoya also cast doubt on Perez returning to Red Bull or joining other Red Bull-affiliated teams, noting that Isack Hadjar is more likely to replace Yuki Tsunoda if changes happen at VCARB.
As the 2026 driver market begins to heat up, Perez’s next move will be a defining one — and according to Montoya, Alpine may offer the best chance to close out his F1 career on a high.
