Ianis Hagi does want to leave Rangers for La Liga because he thinks the style of football there is best suited to him.

The Gers winger told MARCA on 21 March that Spain is “where I want to be” after falling in love with everything about La Liga while on loan with Alaves this season.

His father, Romanian legend Gheorghe, had only this week shot down claims the 25-year-old is looking to leave Ibrox in the summer as “false” but now the man himself has admitted it is his aim, despite speaking highly of his time in Glasgow and saying he is “very grateful” for the love of the fans.

Hagi said (translated to English): “I love the level of La Liga, I love everything in Spain: the teams, the competition between players and teams, the pressure that exists here…

“I feel that it is the League in which I can be most successful and in which I can bring out all my qualities and it is the league that I have followed since I was a child and it was always my dream to be here. I’m here now and I want to be here for a long time.”

Asked specifically if he saw himself in Spain next year he answered: “Yes, it is where I want to be. It is the football in which I want to grow, it is the football that I believe can unlock the best version of me. I’ve only been here 6-7 months and I already feel like I’m a better player, I’m growing every day, in training and in games.

“I see progression every day and I believe that in the near future my best qualities will be unlocked and I will show everyone who I am.”

It seemed that perhaps the changing picture back in Scotland, with Philippe Clement replacing Michael Beale and revitalising the title challenge, might have interested the Romanian international in returning to fight for a place under the new manager.

But he appears to have directly contradicted what his father had just claimed so now it looks like an exit is probably on the cards.
