Montoya Urges Perez to Choose Alpine Over Cadillac as F1 Career Decision Nears

As Sergio Perez prepares for his post-Red Bull future in Formula 1, former driver Juan Pablo Montoya has advised the Mexican veteran to steer clear of Cadillac and instead pursue a seat with Alpine — a move he believes is far more sensible for the final stretch of Perez’s career.

With Cadillac set to join the grid in 2026 through Andretti’s entry, Perez has reportedly emerged as a top target for the new American team. But Montoya believes a switch to Alpine would provide Perez with greater short-term stability and competitiveness.

“If Sergio Perez can land a seat at Alpine next year, that would be a far better move than going to Cadillac,” Montoya told Sites de Apostas. “If he’s only planning to race for another year or two, Alpine makes much more sense.”

Montoya’s comments follow Alpine’s decision to sign young driver Franco Colapinto on a five-race contract — a move that has fueled speculation the team may be eyeing an experienced name like Perez depending on Colapinto’s performance.

“It’s a tough call with Colapinto,” Montoya added. “But if Perez is looking to stay with a more established and competitive team, Alpine is the smarter choice.”

Perez, 34, has remained open about his future plans, stating earlier this year that he intends to decide within six months. In a recent interview with F1.com, he reiterated that he’s seeking a project where his experience will be valued.

“If I find a project that truly motivates me — where the team believes in me and appreciates my experience — that’s something I’d seriously consider,” Perez said.

While Cadillac’s upcoming F1 debut has attracted attention, the team remains an unknown quantity. Alpine, although facing challenges of its own, offers a proven setup and clearer prospects for competitiveness.

Montoya also dismissed the likelihood of Perez returning to Red Bull or joining a sister team like VCARB, noting that junior driver Isack Hadjar is the more likely candidate to replace Yuki Tsunoda if changes occur there.

With the 2026 driver market beginning to heat up, Montoya’s advice highlights a critical crossroads for Perez  one that could shape the final chapter of his Formula 1 career.
