Sergio Perez’s hopes of returning to the Formula 1 grid have been given a significant lift, following comments from a high-ranking figure within one of the sport’s soon-to-be newest teams. Although currently without a race seat after being dropped by Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season, the experienced Mexican driver may not be finished with F1 just yet.
The positive update comes from none other than Mario Andretti, the legendary former world champion and advisor to the incoming Cadillac F1 team. Cadillac, who are set to join Formula 1 as the 11th team on the grid starting in 2026, are in the process of identifying their driver line-up. During a recent appearance on the Fox Sports Pit Talk podcast, Andretti revealed that Perez is very much on their radar as they consider their options for their debut season.
Andretti confirmed that Perez is among a small group of drivers being evaluated for a potential race seat. He stated, “All I can tell you is that he’s certainly one of the drivers that’s being considered. He has to be.” While Andretti stopped short of confirming any formal discussions or commitments, his remarks are the clearest indication yet that Perez remains a serious contender for a return to the sport in the near future.
The Cadillac project, spearheaded by Andretti Global in partnership with General Motors, has been working behind the scenes to build a competitive entry into Formula 1. Gaining FIA approval in 2023, the team has since been focused on assembling the right infrastructure, technical staff, and of course, a capable driver lineup to hit the ground running. Given Perez’s experience, including multiple Grand Prix wins and years spent at top teams such as Racing Point and Red Bull, he is an appealing option for a brand seeking instant credibility and results.
Although no final decision has been made, being shortlisted by Cadillac is a promising sign for Perez’s future in the sport. After a turbulent 2024 season that led to his exit from Red Bull, Perez has been seeking a path back to the grid. His name being publicly linked to a new team like Cadillac not only reflects the respect he commands in the paddock but also signals that opportunities still exist for seasoned drivers in a rapidly evolving F1 landscape.
For now, Perez and fans alike will have to wait as Cadillac continues its evaluation process. However, this development marks a clear step forward in what could be a remarkable comeback story for the 34-year-old driver.
