McLaren to Leave Formula E as Zak Brown Sets Sights on Triple Crown Sweep

McLaren Racing has officially announced its departure from the Formula E championship, as CEO Zak Brown shifts focus toward an ambitious new chapter: winning motorsport’s prestigious Triple Crown in a single season.

The decision marks a significant step in McLaren’s strategic overhaul, with the team preparing to join the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) grid in 2027. The goal? To claim victory in the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500, and 24 Hours of Le Mans all within the same year — a feat no team has ever accomplished.

“Thirty years ago, we won Le Mans on our debut — in a car that wasn’t even built to race. That moment defined us,” Brown stated. “Now, we’re pushing for something even bigger: conquering the Triple Crown in one season. We believe we’re ready.”

McLaren remains the only constructor in history to have won all three Triple Crown events, though never simultaneously. With current success in Formula 1 — where they top the 2024 Constructors’ Standings — and a strong presence in IndyCar, the team is laying the groundwork to attempt motorsport’s ultimate achievement.

To reallocate resources toward this ambitious goal, McLaren will exit Formula E at the conclusion of the 2024–25 season. Since joining the electric racing series in 2022 under the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team banner, the team has claimed one win and six podium finishes. Currently, young driver Taylor Barnard holds fourth in the championship, while the team ranks third overall.

Though proud of their achievements in Formula E, Brown explained that the decision aligns with the team’s long-term priorities. “We value what Formula E offers the motorsport world, but now is the right time to pursue avenues that align more directly with McLaren’s future — especially our WEC entry,” he said.

McLaren is now seeking a new owner for the Formula E outfit to ensure the team’s continuation and success within the championship. The exit delivers a blow to Formula E, which faces the challenge of maintaining grid stability heading into the 2026–27 season.

As McLaren pivots toward endurance racing, it does so with a strong driver lineup that includes F1 stars Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as well as IndyCar frontrunner Pato O’Ward. With talent across disciplines and a renewed focus on the Triple Crown, the team is aiming to cement its place in motorsport history once again.

Whether McLaren can pull off this unprecedented sweep remains to be seen  but with determination and vision, they’re prepared to try.
