Red Bull’s Complaint Prompts FIA Investigation into MCL39 Following… Read More

Red Bull Racing has formally raised concerns with the FIA regarding the legality and performance of McLaren’s 2025 Formula One car, the MCL39. This comes in light of McLaren’s dominant start to the season, where they have emerged as the team to beat by winning five out of the first six Grands Prix. The primary driver behind these wins has been Oscar Piastri, whose performances in China and Miami stood out due to the considerable margins by which he clinched victory. His form has been matched by Lando Norris in terms of consistency and teamwork, pushing McLaren into a strong championship position early in the season.

Despite Max Verstappen managing to secure three pole positions during qualifying rounds, the McLaren duo has matched that feat by earning three pole positions of their own. This demonstrates that McLaren has not only built a fast car for race day but also one that can deliver on single-lap pace during qualifying. While many expected McLaren to shine particularly on Middle Eastern tracks, the team’s continued success across varied circuits—including more technical and newly surfaced tracks like Shanghai—has drawn closer scrutiny.

One of the key elements setting the MCL39 apart appears to be its extraordinary tyre efficiency. At the Chinese Grand Prix, held at the recently resurfaced Shanghai International Circuit, both McLaren drivers managed their tyres with such precision that the post-race inspection revealed almost negligible wear. Observers noted that their tyres appeared as if they had been used for only a few laps, despite being run for nearly the entire race distance. This has raised eyebrows in the paddock, especially among rival teams like Red Bull, who are questioning whether McLaren’s technological edge falls within the regulatory framework.

Red Bull’s concerns stem not just from losing races, but from the nature of McLaren’s advantage—particularly the consistency of their pace throughout long stints and the minimal tyre degradation under race conditions. With no significant drop-off in performance, the MCL39 may be benefiting from an innovation that gives them a clear strategic edge. Consequently, Red Bull has submitted a formal complaint to the FIA, prompting motorsport’s governing body to launch an investigation into the McLaren package. The FIA is expected to examine elements such as tyre heat management systems, aerodynamic flexibility, and any novel mechanical components that could explain this superior performance without breaching existing rules.

The F1 community now waits to see whether the MCL39’s performance is the result of ingenious engineering within the rules or something that warrants regulatory intervention.
