Norris advised to stop focusing on Piastri and concentrate solely on his own performance ahead of the Imola Grand Prix.
Ahead of the 2025 Imola Grand Prix, former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya advised Lando Norris to “take Piastri out of the equation” and concentrate solely on his own performance. Montoya emphasized that by focusing on his own speed, Norris could outperform Max Verstappen and, consequently, his teammate Oscar Piastri. He cautioned that engaging in battles with Verstappen might inadvertently benefit Piastri in the championship standings .
Currently, Oscar Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with four wins in the first six races, including a recent victory at the Miami Grand Prix. Lando Norris trails by 16 points, having secured a single win at the Australian Grand Prix .
McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, has also weighed in, suggesting that Norris should have been more patient during his attempt to overtake Verstappen at the start of the Miami Grand Prix. Norris was pushed wide and dropped to sixth but managed to recover and finish second behind Piastri .
Despite the internal competition, McLaren CEO Zak Brown has ruled out implementing team orders between Norris and Piastri, indicating that both drivers are free to race each other for the championship .
