FIA issue McLaren MCL39 verdict after ‘intensive’ investigation l….read more

Following the Miami Grand Prix, the FIA—the governing body of Formula 1—has completed a detailed investigation into the legality of McLaren’s MCL39 car, confirming that it is fully compliant with the 2025 technical regulations. The inspection was part of standard FIA protocol and targeted Oscar Piastri’s car after his dominant performance in Miami, where he secured his fourth win in five races.

McLaren has enjoyed an exceptional start to the 2025 F1 season, capturing five victories in the first six races and building a commanding lead in the Constructors’ Championship. The impressive form of the MCL39 has drawn considerable attention from rival teams and observers, particularly regarding its rear braking system. This component is believed to be instrumental in the car’s outstanding tyre management and overall pace advantage.

After the Miami race, Oscar Piastri’s car—number 81—was selected at random from the top ten finishers for an in-depth inspection. This is a standard part of FIA post-race scrutineering, where the technical delegate, Jo Bauer, selects certain cars for more comprehensive checks. According to PlanetF1.com, the focus of the inspection was on the wheel bodywork assemblies, especially around the rear braking components, given ongoing speculation that they might be providing McLaren with a significant edge.

In an official statement issued before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, the FIA clarified that all the components checked during the inspection of Piastri’s car were found to conform to the F1 2025 technical rulebook. Bauer’s verdict stated that the wheel bodywork assemblies on all four corners of the car underwent extensive physical checks, and no irregularities were found.

Piastri currently leads the Drivers’ Championship standings with a 16-point margin over his teammate Lando Norris, showcasing McLaren’s dominance in both individual and team competitions. The Australian has emerged as a serious title contender, with his consistency and speed keeping him just ahead of Norris in what is becoming an exciting intra-team rivalry.

The FIA’s confirmation should silence any rumors or doubts surrounding the legality of the MCL39’s innovative design. While the car’s performance has raised eyebrows, the governing body’s thorough examination serves as reassurance that McLaren’s success has been achieved within the legal framework of the sport.

As the championship heads to Imola for the next race weekend, McLaren will look to continue its momentum, now backed by a clean bill of health from the FIA. Both drivers remain key figures in what is shaping up to be an enthralling season of racing.
