Dan Campbell is thrilled that the NFL is bringing back kickoff returns.

The NFL recently implemented several rule changes during this week’s league meetings, with a focus on transforming the kickoff to enhance player safety while maintaining its excitement. Essentially, they’ve adopted the XFL’s kickoff format, which includes the following key points:

1. The “Kickoff Team’s Restraining Line” requires all players except the kicker to be 25 yards ahead of the kick, or at the opponent’s 40-yard line for a standard kickoff from the 35-yard line. Players must have one foot on the line and cannot move until the ball is caught or touches the ground.

2. The “Receiving Team’s Restraining Line” is 5 yards beyond the kickoff team’s line, at their own 35-yard line for a regular kickoff. The receiving team cannot advance beyond this line until the ball is received or touches the ground.

3. A “setup zone” exists for the receiving team, where nine players must stay until the ball is caught or touches the ground. This zone is between the receiving team’s restraining line and 5 yards behind it, roughly between the 30 and 35-yard line on normal kickoffs.

4. Touchbacks now place the ball at the 30-yard line, while touchbacks bouncing in the “landing zone” (goal line to the 20-yard line) and then into the end zone put the ball at the 20-yard line.

5. Fair catches are no longer allowed, and onside kicks are permitted only in the fourth quarter.

It’s important to note that these changes are being implemented on a one-year trial basis.
