Hamilton confirms Ferrari race engineer update after fr… read more
Lewis Hamilton has shared a positive update on his relationship with his new Ferrari race engineer, Riccardo Adami, following a challenging start to their collaboration in the 2025 Formula 1 season. The dynamic between a race driver and their engineer is a vital component of performance, as engineers are responsible for relaying strategic decisions, pit stop timings, and other crucial updates from the team.
Throughout F1 history, legendary drivers have thrived under strong race engineer partnerships—Max Verstappen with Gianpiero Lambiase and Hamilton himself with Peter Bonnington at Mercedes being prime examples. However, since his high-profile move to Ferrari, Hamilton has found it difficult to adjust to the new team environment and his working relationship with Adami.
Tensions between the pair have been evident over recent race weekends, especially during the Miami Grand Prix. There, Hamilton’s irritation surfaced when Ferrari hesitated in implementing team orders to allow him to pass teammate Charles Leclerc. The delay led to a sarcastic radio message from Hamilton, who told Adami to “have a tea-break while you’re at it,” highlighting his mounting frustration with the communication and decision-making within the Ferrari garage.
Despite these early hurdles, Hamilton’s recent fourth-place finish at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola seems to have turned the tide. It marked his strongest performance since joining Ferrari and provided a much-needed boost for the British driver. Speaking after the race, Hamilton praised both the team’s strategy and Adami’s radio communication, signaling a noticeable shift in tone and mood.
“The team did a fantastic job with the strategy; they were faultless. We’re slowly getting there. Riccardo [Adami] did a fantastic job with his communication with me,” Hamilton told Sky Sports Italia. “I was calm, so he was calm and the team was calm in executing the strategy, and the pit stops were awesome. So overall, mega!”
This calm and composed version of Hamilton contrasts sharply with his demeanor just weeks earlier. In Miami, he was visibly exasperated, particularly after a qualifying session where both he and Leclerc failed to make it into Q3. But in Imola, Hamilton appeared rejuvenated, attributing the improvement to better team coordination and a smoother engineering relationship.
The race also marked a significant milestone for Hamilton, as it was his first Grand Prix in front of Ferrari’s passionate home fans—the tifosi. His performance, coupled with Ferrari’s latest car upgrades, has provided hope that the team is finally unlocking the potential of their 2025 package.
As the season progresses, Hamilton and Ferrari will look to build on the momentum gained at Imola. The improved communication with Adami could be the key to helping Hamilton challenge for podiums and deliver on the high expectations that came with his move to the Scuderia. If the partnership continues to grow, Hamilton’s dream of succeeding with Ferrari may yet be
come a reality.
