Be Wary of Signing Former Ravens Running Back, Browns.

The Cleveland Browns are not inclined to acquire a new top-tier running back to avoid undermining Nick Chubb’s confidence as he recuperates from injury. While the name of former Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins has emerged as a potential target for the Browns, Dobbins, like Chubb, is recovering from a season-ending Achilles injury. However, Dobbins has been medically cleared for football activities.

Although Dobbins could be a cost-effective addition with considerable potential, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com does not anticipate the Browns pursuing a running back of his caliber. Cabot emphasized on the latest episode of the Orange and Browns Talk podcast that the Browns’ reluctance to pursue another primary running back reflects their belief in Chubb’s eventual return to full health. Signing another top-tier running back might suggest doubt in Chubb’s recovery, a message the Browns wish to avoid conveying.

Since entering the league in 2020, Dobbins has appeared in only 20 games due to a pair of season-ending injuries. Despite his limited appearances, he displayed significant productivity during his rookie season in Baltimore, amassing 805 yards on 134 carries with 9 touchdowns. However, he missed the entire 2021 season with a torn ACL and nine games in 2022 due to a knee injury sustained in the season opener.

Meanwhile, the Browns remain optimistic about Nick Chubb’s progress in rehabilitation. Chubb is poised to enter the next phase of his recovery next month after sustaining a severe knee injury in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the exact timeline for his return remains uncertain, the Browns are confident that the four-time Pro Bowler will contribute during the upcoming season.

In the offseason, the Browns bolstered their running back depth by signing D’Onta Foreman and Nyheim Hines. Foreman, who accumulated 1,339 yards and 9 touchdowns over the last two seasons with the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears, is expected to assume a role similar to Kareem Hunt’s, focusing on grinding out tough yards. Hines, valued for his pass-catching abilities and potential impact in the return game, adds versatility to the backfield. Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr. are also slated to return next season, with Ford having shouldered lead-back duties in Chubb’s absence, recording 813 yards and 4 touchdowns.
