Major Monaco Grand Prix Change Confirmed After O…read more
Monaco, May 21, 2025 — A significant change to the Monaco Grand Prix weekend has been officially confirmed following a high-level Formula 1 meeting held earlier today. The decision, unanimously approved by the FIA and team representatives, marks a notable shift in the structure of one of the sport’s most historic and prestigious events.
Effective immediately, the traditional Thursday practice sessions will be replaced by a more standardized weekend format, bringing Monaco in line with all other races on the F1 calendar. From this year onward, all free practice sessions will be held on Friday, qualifying on Saturday, and the race on Sunday — eliminating the unique four-day schedule that has long defined the Monaco Grand Prix.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated, “While Monaco remains a cornerstone of the Formula 1 world championship, it’s essential we modernize the event format to improve consistency, logistics, and broadcast engagement across the season.”
The move is seen as part of a broader effort by F1 to streamline race weekends and enhance competitiveness. While the traditional Thursday start had deep roots in Monaco’s calendar due to local customs and historical scheduling, the change is expected to make operations more efficient for teams and reduce costs.
Reactions from teams and drivers have been mixed. Some veteran drivers expressed disappointment at losing a distinctive feature of the Monte Carlo event, while others welcomed the alignment with the rest of the season’s schedule.
The Monaco Grand Prix remains one of the most iconic races in motorsport, and while its format may now mirror others, the challenge of racing through its tight, unforgiving streets remains unchanged.
