McLaren Confirm Pato O’Ward for 2025 Mexican GP FP1 Session

McLaren Racing has officially confirmed that Pato O’Ward, the highly popular Mexican IndyCar driver, will get another opportunity to showcase his abilities in Formula 1. O’Ward is set to participate in the first free practice session (FP1) at the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix, scheduled for October 24 at the iconic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. This appearance marks a significant homecoming for the 25-year-old driver, as he returns to the F1 paddock to perform in front of an adoring Mexican crowd.

This won’t be O’Ward’s debut in a Formula 1 car at this circuit. He previously took part in FP1 during the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix, where he substituted for Lando Norris. That outing was seen as an important step in O’Ward’s development, allowing him to gain invaluable experience while offering McLaren a chance to assess his potential in a high-pressure F1 environment. His performance was well-received by both the team and fans, prompting McLaren to extend another opportunity this year — a strong endorsement of his growth and promise as a future F1 contender.

Currently competing in the IndyCar Series with Arrow McLaren, O’Ward has earned a reputation as one of the most talented and charismatic drivers outside of Formula 1. His aggressive driving style, consistent results, and fan-friendly personality have made him a standout talent. McLaren’s decision to once again place him behind the wheel during a Grand Prix weekend reflects not only their belief in his potential but also the team’s broader strategy of fostering talent from within its diverse motorsport programs.

Following the announcement, O’Ward shared his enthusiasm, noting how special it is to compete on home soil. “I’m thrilled to be jumping back into the car for FP1 at my home race in Mexico,” he said. “The energy from the fans last year was incredible, and it felt amazing to deliver everything the team asked for. I’m really looking forward to doing it all over again.” His words highlight the strong emotional connection he shares with his Mexican supporters and his motivation to make them proud.

Beyond the sentimental value, McLaren’s decision also aligns with the FIA’s requirement for teams to give driving time to rookies or non-regular F1 drivers during the season. However, this is more than a regulatory formality. These sessions offer teams like McLaren a chance to gain insights from emerging drivers while keeping an eye on possible future race seat candidates. For O’Ward, it’s a chance to prove that his skills can translate seamlessly into the top tier of motorsport.

The Mexico City Grand Prix is known for its electrifying atmosphere, passionate crowds, and national pride. For O’Ward, racing in FP1 on home turf is not only a deeply personal experience but also a professional stepping stone. Surrounded by roaring fans and competing on a track he knows well, O’Ward will be determined to make every lap count — both to impress McLaren and to continue his path toward a potential full-time Formula 1 career.
