Charles Leclerc Demands Action After Online Abuse Directed at Mick Doohan

Ferrari Formula 1 star Charles Leclerc has spoken out against toxic behaviour within the F1 fanbase following a recent wave of online abuse targeting former motorcycle champion Mick Doohan.

The controversy erupted after a fake Instagram story, appearing to show Mick Doohan mocking Franco Colapinto’s crash during qualifying at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, circulated online. The incident gained traction due to Colapinto having recently taken Jack Doohan’s spot in Alpine’s driver academy setup. Although the post was confirmed to be fabricated and the responsible party issued an apology, it had already sparked widespread backlash and personal attacks against Doohan.

Reacting to the situation, Leclerc called on fans to show respect and urged for greater responsibility in the digital space.

“I wasn’t aware of all the details of the situation, but I think as a global picture, that’s never something you want to see,” Leclerc told media, including RacingNews365. “Especially now with social media, it’s more and more toxic… the most important thing is just to be respectful. It’s a shame to see these kinds of things.”

Leclerc emphasized the values of respect and integrity within the sport, noting that social media has increasingly become a vehicle for misinformation and hostility.

Alpine driver Pierre Gasly echoed Leclerc’s sentiments, stressing that behind every team and driver are real people with families and emotions.

“I fully agree with what Charles said. I don’t think there’s any space for abuse in any form. It’s just sad to see,” Gasly stated. “You can support any team, any driver, but we need to remember there are human beings behind these names.”

The incident also prompted statements from Jack Doohan and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, particularly after tensions further escalated involving Colapinto and Yuki Tsunoda.

This episode has once again highlighted the dark side of social media in sport, with key voices in F1 now pushing for a cultural shift that prioritizes empathy and respect both on and off the track.
