FIA Rule Forces McLaren Change Cars Amid Risk…read more
McLaren has announced updates to both of its Formula 1 cars ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, prompted by an FIA regulation that could lead to grid penalties if not properly managed.
The team has responded to a recent FIA directive enforcing stricter compliance with Article 5 of the technical regulations, which limits the number of power unit components used throughout the season. To stay within legal limits and avoid sanctions, McLaren has fitted new parts—including updated energy stores and control electronics—to the cars of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Although these adjustments are still within the allowed usage for the season, any further changes during the Monaco weekend could result in penalties. With overtaking notoriously difficult on the narrow streets of Monte Carlo, even a minor penalty could severely impact race outcomes.
A team representative explained, “We’ve taken a proactive approach to stay aligned with the FIA’s latest directives. It’s a calculated move to avoid any surprises during such a crucial event.”
As McLaren continues its strong campaign, the decision underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing reliability with competitiveness at one of Formula 1’s most demanding circuits.
