Oscar Piastri Crashes in FP2 at Monaco Grand Prix, Walks Away Unscathed
McLaren F1 star Oscar Piastri endured a rare misstep during Free Practice 2 at the Monaco Grand Prix, crashing into the tyre barriers at Sainte-Devotein a dramatic incident that briefly halted the session.
The 24-year-old Australian, who currently leads the 2025 Drivers’ Championship with four race wins this season, locked up under braking and slid straight into the barriers, losing the front wing of his MCL39. A red flag was quickly deployed while marshals cleared the wreckage.
Despite the intensity of the crash, Piastri confirmed over team radio that he was unharmed and made his way back to the pits. The McLaren crew quickly assessed the damage, replaced the nose cone, and sent him back out in the closing stages of the session.
Widely regarded as one of the most composed and consistent drivers on the grid, Piastri will likely breathe a sigh of relief that the incident occurred during practice rather than qualifying, where mistakes at Monaco often prove far more costly. A poor grid position around the tight, twisty street circuit usually spells the end of any hopes for a podium — as famously demonstrated by Max Verstappen’s FP3 crash in 2018 that ruined his shot at a front-row start.
Piastri and McLaren will now look to regroup ahead of Saturday’s all-important qualifying session, with eyes firmly fixed on keeping the championship momentum alive.
