Carson Kelly’s clutch hitting propelled the Detroit Tigers to a 7-6 comeback victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Kelly delivered run-scoring singles in both the seventh and 10th innings, providing the decisive blows in the thrilling win.
Mark Canha and Riley Greene contributed homers for the Tigers, who had previously edged out the White Sox 1-0 in their opening day matchup. Parker Meadows showcased his defensive prowess from the leadoff spot and made a spectacular leaping catch in center field to rob Martín Maldonado of a potential home run.
In the pivotal 10th inning, Canha, the automatic runner on second base, set the stage for Kelly’s heroics with a grounder up the middle against Deivi García (0-1), propelling Detroit into the lead. Earlier in the seventh inning, Kelly’s two-out single drove in Canha, knotting the score at 6-6.
Shelby Miller (1-0) delivered a sterling performance, pitching two flawless innings to earn the win for the Tigers.
Reflecting on the team’s ambitions, Kelly emphasized the importance of winning close games like this to achieve their postseason aspirations.
Chicago’s offense was spearheaded by Luis Robert Jr., who launched a pair of two-run homers, while Braden Shewmake also contributed with a solo shot. Robert’s impressive performance included a mammoth 449-foot blast in the first inning and a deep drive to left-center in the third, propelling the White Sox to a 5-3 lead. The All-Star center fielder’s stellar outing marked his sixth career multihomer game.
Despite Robert’s offensive fireworks, Detroit fought back from a three-run deficit, highlighted by Canha’s homer in the fifth and Greene’s leadoff blast in the seventh. The Tigers’ resilience was further underscored by their ability to stifle a bases-loaded threat from the White Sox in the bottom of the seventh, culminating in a crucial double play induced by Will Vest.
Maeda endured a challenging outing in his debut for Detroit, yielding six runs and seven hits over 3 1/3 innings. Despite his struggles, Maeda remained determined to bounce back in his next start.
Shewmake made an immediate impact in his Chicago debut, launching a home run on the first pitch he saw. His memorable moment marked the first time a White Sox player had homered in his first major league hit since Zack Collins achieved the feat in 2019.
Shewmake, along with Soroka, who made his debut for the White Sox, was acquired in a November trade that sent reliever Aaron Bummer to Atlanta.
