FIA Confirms  Penalty for Failing to Comply with New Monaco GP Tyre Rule

The FIA has officially introduced a major regulation change for the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, confirming that all drivers must complete two mandatory pit stops during the race — with disqualification as the penalty for any team that fails to comply.

Approved by the World Motor Sport Council and added to Article 30.5 m) of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, the rule aims to add more excitement and unpredictability to the Monaco GP, often criticized for its lack of overtaking opportunities due to the tight and twisty street circuit.

Monaco has long been known for conservative, single-stop strategies, with tyre wear traditionally low and track position crucial. However, starting in 2025, that tactic will no longer be an option. Every driver must now make two separate pit stops, forcing teams to rethink their strategy and opening the door to more variation in race outcomes.

“This rule is designed to encourage more dynamic racing in Monaco, where overtaking has always been a challenge,” said an FIA spokesperson. “Teams must now approach the race differently — and any failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate disqualification.”

The change could shake up the competitive landscape, creating new opportunities for midfield teams to fight for points and bringing added drama to one of the calendar’s most prestigious events.

As teams prepare for Monaco 2025, this new rule is already being seen as a potential game-changer in Formula 1’s ongoing efforts to improve race-day

spectacle.
