Max Verstappen Criticises F1 Rivals After ‘Dangerous’ Monaco Grand Prix Incident

Max Verstappen has openly criticised his Formula 1 competitors following a contentious incident during the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix. The reigning world champion expressed his frustration over the newly implemented two-stop strategy, which he believes compromised the integrity of the race.

The Monaco Grand Prix introduced a mandatory two-stop rule requiring drivers to use three different tyre compounds, aiming to enhance overtaking opportunities on the notoriously tight circuit. However, the strategy backfired, with the top four drivers finishing in their starting positions and minimal on-track action observed. Verstappen sarcastically likened the race to “Mario Kart,” suggesting that the changes failed to deliver the intended excitement .

Verstappen’s discontent was further fueled by a late-race incident involving McLaren’s Lando Norris. The Dutch driver accused Norris of executing a “dangerous” manoeuvre that nearly resulted in a collision. He stated, “If we start racing like that, then we should expect more crashes. It’s not racing; it’s dangerous driving.”

The incident has sparked a broader debate within the F1 community about the effectiveness of artificial strategies to enhance race excitement. Mercedes driver George Russell echoed Verstappen’s sentiments, proposing the replacement of the Monaco Grand Prix with two qualifying sessions to better showcase driver skill .

Despite the controversy, McLaren’s Lando Norris secured his second win of the season, finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and teammate Oscar Piastri. Verstappen, hindered by the enforced pit stops and the incident with Norris, finished fourth, missing out on a podium finish .

As the F1 calendar progresses, the debate over race formats and safety continues, with drivers and teams calling for a reassessment of strategies to ensure both excitement and integrity in the sport.
