FIA Confirms Monaco Grand Prix Disqualification Threat Over New Tyre Rule

In a major regulatory shift designed to boost excitement at one of Formula 1’s most prestigious events, the FIA has confirmed a new mandatory tyre rule for the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix—warning that strict penalties, including disqualification, will be enforced for non-compliance.

The World Motor Sport Council has approved a revision to the F1 Sporting Regulations, introducing a rule that mandates all drivers to make two compulsory pit stops during the 2025 race in Monte Carlo. Codified in Article 30.5 m) of the regulations, this change aims to bring more unpredictability and overtaking opportunities to a race often criticised for its lack of drama and processional nature due to the circuit’s tight, overtaking-unfriendly layout.

This move marks a clear break from the traditional single-stop strategy commonly seen in Monaco, where minimal tyre degradation and the importance of track position often encourage conservative approaches. Previously, teams could stretch a single stint to minimise pit stops, turning the race into a tyre-preservation exercise.

From 2025 onward, however, that strategy will no longer be viable. Every driver must now complete two separate pit stops, forcing teams to adopt more dynamic and creative race strategies. The rule change is expected to mix up the running order mid-race and provide more opportunities for midfield teams to challenge the front-runners.

Failure to adhere to the new requirement will carry serious consequences. The FIA has confirmed that any driver failing to complete both stops risks disqualification from the race results, highlighting the governing body’s strict stance on enforcement.

The decision follows growing criticism that the Monaco Grand Prix has become too predictable, with fans and pundits alike calling for reform. Despite its unmatched glamour and heritage, the race has struggled to deliver thrilling on-track action in recent years due to the circuit’s narrow confines.

This year’s 2024 race added to the ongoing debate, as Lewis Hamilton crashed out dramatically while battling at the front, and both Red Bull and McLaren were unexpectedly off the pace—leading to a result that defied expectations. Sensing momentum from this recent unpredictability, the FIA appears determined to push the envelope further in 2025.

With the new regulation, the FIA aims not only to shake up strategy but also to level the playing field and encourage bolder competition. The stakes are now higher than ever: teams must comply, or risk seeing their race—and potential points—stripped away. The Monaco Grand Prix is entering a new chapter, where strategy, agility, and strict rule-following may determine who triumphs and who falters.
