FIA Confirms Disqualification at Monaco Grand Prix for Ra…read more

In a dramatic turn of events following the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, the FIA has confirmed the disqualification of George Russell and Fernando Alonso due to post-race technical infringements. The ruling came after routine inspections revealed irregularities in the floor plank thickness of both drivers’ cars, a breach of Formula 1’s strict technical regulations.

George Russell, who had originally finished in fifth place, and Fernando Alonso, who secured eighth, were both stripped of their points after stewards found that their cars did not comply with Article 3.5.9 e) of the Technical Regulations. This rule mandates a minimum thickness of the plank beneath the car to prevent teams from running cars too low to the ground, which could provide an aerodynamic advantage.

Mercedes and Aston Martin, the teams of Russell and Alonso respectively, expressed disappointment in the FIA’s decision but acknowledged the stewards’ findings. Both teams have opted not to appeal the ruling, citing respect for the regulatory process and the precedent it sets for future compliance.

The disqualifications have reshuffled the final standings, promoting drivers such as Oscar Piastri and Esteban Ocon into the points. The revised results may have significant implications for the championship battle as the season progresses.

FIA Race Director Niels Wittich emphasized that the decision underscores the importance of adhering strictly to the technical rulebook. “Our responsibility is to ensure fairness and safety. No team is above the regulations,” Wittich stated.

As the Formula 1 circus prepares for the Canadian Grand Prix, the paddock is abuzz with discussions over the tight tolerances and unforgiving nature of the sport’s regulations, a reminder that even the slightest oversight can have dramatic consequences.
