Which elite quarterback prospect the Denver Broncos are probably not interested in.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has openly expressed the team’s eagerness to secure one of the top quarterbacks available in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. However, it seems that one prominent quarterback won’t be in contention for the Broncos.

Following the departure of Russell Wilson this offseason, Jarrett Stidham is currently slated to be the starting quarterback for the Broncos in 2024. While Payton is receptive to this possibility due to Stidham’s late-season performance in 2023, the organization is still seeking additional quarterback options.

Broncos officials have been actively scouting top quarterback prospects across the country this spring. While they understand that acquiring Caleb Williams is unlikely and trading up for Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye is improbable, Denver is thoroughly evaluating the available signal-callers.

Fortunately, the 2024 quarterback class is highly regarded, with five quarterbacks expected to be first-round picks. Additionally, Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix is anticipated to be selected early in the second round. However, it appears that Payton and the Broncos are not particularly keen on one specific quarterback.

According to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette, there is a sense within the organization that the Broncos “do not have great interest” in drafting Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

It’s worth noting that while Tomasson mentioned Broncos officials’ absence from the Huskies’ Pro Day, Jim Nagy later pointed out that Denver did send its pass game coordinator, college director, and two scouts to the event. However, Washington boasts multiple first-round prospects and other Day 2 picks who could be on Denver’s radar.

Given that Penix Jr. will be 24 years old as a rookie and his strengths may not align well with Payton’s system, it’s not surprising that Denver might not prioritize the Heisman Trophy runner-up. Instead, McCarthy and Nix appear to be better fits for Payton, making them potential targets for the Broncos.
