In a dramatic turn of events at the Spanish Grand Prix, the FIA has officially announced a grid demotion for Max Verstappen following a controversial on-track incident involving Mercedes driver George Russell during Saturday’s qualifying session.
The decision comes after Verstappen was accused of dangerous driving and impeding Russell in Q3. The Red Bull driver, who initially qualified second, appeared to swerve unexpectedly in front of Russell during a high-speed flying lap, forcing the Briton to back off and compromising his final time.
Following a stewards’ investigation, the FIA issued a statement:
“After reviewing footage and telemetry data, it has been determined that Car #1 (Max Verstappen) impeded Car #63 (George Russell) in a manner deemed unsportsmanlike and in breach of Article 33.4 of the Sporting Regulations. As such, a three-place grid penalty has been applied.”
This demotion means Verstappen will now start fifth on the grid, promoting Lando Norris to the front row alongside pole-sitter Charles Leclerc. George Russell, who qualified fifth, will move up to fourth.
The incident has sparked debate across the paddock and among fans. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner described the ruling as “harsh and inconsistent,” while Russell called it a “clear-cut case” of interference.
With championship implications looming large, Verstappen’s penalty sets the stage for a tense and fiery Sunday showdown in Barcelona. Stay tuned for more updates as the story develops.
