Cadillac F1 Secures Major Signing Ahead of 2026 Formula 1 Debut

Cadillac’s entry into Formula 1 for the 2026 season has taken a significant step forward with the announcement of a major signing: former F1 driver Marcus Ericsson. The American manufacturer, backed by General Motors, is set to become the 11th team on the grid, and the addition of Ericsson brings valuable experience to the fledgling outfit.

Ericsson, who previously raced for teams like Caterham and Sauber in Formula 1, has been enlisted to aid Cadillac in developing and refining their simulation technologies. His recent success in IndyCar, including a victory at the Indianapolis 500 with Chip Ganassi Racing, underscores his versatility and deep understanding of motorsport dynamics. Now, he brings this wealth of experience to Cadillac’s F1 endeavor, particularly in selecting and refining simulation technologies.

The team, led by Team Principal Graeme Lowdon, is assembling a competitive driver lineup for its debut season. Lowdon emphasized that driver selection will be based on merit, stating, “We definitely select on merit. Formula 1, it’s not a playground; this is the pinnacle of world motorsport.”  Potential candidates include experienced F1 drivers like Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Pérez, and Mick Schumacher, as well as American talents such as Colton Herta.

Initially, Cadillac will utilize Ferrari power units and gearboxes for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, with plans to develop its own engines by 2028.  The team’s infrastructure is rapidly expanding, with over 300 personnel working across various bases in the U.S. and the U.K., focusing on aerodynamics, chassis development, and vehicle dynamics simulation.

As Cadillac accelerates its preparations, the addition of Marcus Ericsson marks a significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a competitive force in Formula 1.
