Aston Martin Shares Health Update on Lance Stroll After Spanish GP Withdrawal

Aston Martin has broken its silence regarding Lance Stroll’s health following his absence from the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend. The Canadian F1 driver was forced to sit out the race due to recurring pain in his hand and wrist—an issue linked to injuries he sustained in a cycling accident back in 2023.

As a result, the team was only able to field one car at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Stroll withdrawing after qualifying. Whether or not he will recover in time for his home race in Canada, scheduled for next weekend, remains uncertain.

A spokesperson for Aston Martin confirmed to GPFans that Stroll recently underwent surgery on his wrist. However, the team could not provide additional details on his condition or confirm his availability for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

Mike Krack Sheds Light on Ongoing Injury

Speaking to the media after the Spanish Grand Prix, Aston Martin’s chief trackside engineer, Mike Krack, gave more insight into Stroll’s situation. According to Krack, the lingering injury stems from the cycling crash in 2023—an incident that initially sidelined Stroll early in that season.

“As many of you know, this dates back to 2023 when Lance sustained some injuries. Over the last few weeks, there’s been the occasional mention of pain,” Krack explained. “But it’s not something you ask the driver about constantly—‘Do you feel pain now?’ It’s more of a subtle understanding through conversations with the physio or the driver himself.”

Krack noted that drivers are often incredibly determined to stay on the track, even if it means pushing through physical discomfort. He praised Stroll’s resilience, referencing how the Canadian made a swift return to racing last year despite similar struggles.

“Drivers love what they do and will often race through more pain than they’ll admit. Lance showed that same spirit in 2023 when he came back early,” Krack said. “But this weekend, it became clear things weren’t improving. After Saturday’s qualifying, Lance and his medical team decided it was best to undergo further checks, and the advice was to sit out the race.”

Canadian GP Participation Still Uncertain

As of now, there is no confirmation on whether Stroll will be ready to compete in Montreal. Krack mentioned that the 25-year-old driver would be undergoing more tests in the days ahead.

“We’ll have to wait and see what the coming days bring,” Krack added. “More checks are planned, and only after those will we have a better understanding of his condition. It’s hard to predict anything at this point.”

Reserve Drivers Ready to Step In

Should Stroll be ruled out of his home race, Aston Martin has two reserve drivers on standby: Felipe Drugovich and Stoffel Vandoorne. Interestingly, both drivers are scheduled to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which takes place the same weekend as the Canadian GP.

Despite this clash, Brazilian driver Drugovich has made it clear that he’s available for Formula 1 duties if called upon. Aston Martin has yet to announce a contingency plan, but the team will likely make a decision once Stroll’s status is confirmed.

Fans now eagerly await updates on whether the hometown hero will be able to race on Canadian soil—or if Aston Martin will need to rely on one of its reserve talents to fill the seat.
