FIA Issues Statement Condemning Online Abuse After Driver Deletes Social Media

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has issued a strong condemnation of online abuse directed at drivers, following incidents that led to some athletes withdrawing from social media platforms.

In a recent Instagram post co-authored by the FIA, Formula 1, Formula 2, and Formula 3, the organizations collectively stated:

“On behalf of our Teams and Drivers, F1, F2, F3 and the FIA, through their United Against Online Abuse campaign, firmly condemn abuse and harassment of any form. We’ll continue to collectively act upon and report abuse to social media platforms. Whether you are a fan or a part of the motorsport world, we are all driven by passion. At the heart of it all, there are humans.”

The statement comes in response to a series of incidents where drivers have faced significant online harassment. Irish Formula 2 driver Alex Dunne was subjected to widespread vitriol following his involvement in an opening-lap incident during the Monaco feature race, leading him to delete his social media accounts. Dunne described the messages he received as the worst in his life.

Similarly, Japanese F1 driver Yuki Tsunoda faced racist abuse online after an on-track incident with Franco Colapinto during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem responded by stating that no driver should be subjected to such treatment and thanked both Tsunoda and Colapinto for speaking out against the abuse.

The FIA’s United Against Online Abuse campaign aims to tackle the growing issue of online harassment in motorsport by developing educational, technological, and regulatory solutions to protect competitors, officials, and fans.

These recent events highlight the ongoing challenges faced by drivers in the digital age and underscore the importance of collective action to foster a respectful and inclusive environment within the motorsport community.
