Veteran Drivers in Talks for Formula 1 Return with New Team

Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas are reportedly in discussions to return to the Formula 1 grid in 2026, with both eyeing the same seat at the incoming Cadillac team.

The two experienced drivers, who lost their race seats ahead of the 2025 season, are now looking to make a comeback as the sport prepares for a major shakeup in 2026. Cadillac’s entry as the 11th team, along with the new technical regulations, presents a prime opportunity for drivers currently without a drive.

Cadillac is said to be considering a driver lineup featuring one veteran and one younger talent, possibly with American roots. According to F1.com’s Lawrence Barretto, the team “has a strong interest” in Perez, who has already held talks with both Cadillac and Alpine.

Perez, who proved his capabilities at Racing Point and Force India before partnering Max Verstappen at Red Bull, was dropped after struggling to consistently score points in 2024. Despite this, his reputation for strong racecraft, tyre management, and car development remains intact. His significant financial backing, particularly from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, also adds to his appeal.

Alpine’s interest in Perez further complicates the driver market. The team recently replaced Jack Doohan with Franco Colapinto in a bold move under Flavio Briatore’s leadership. With Pierre Gasly secure in the other Alpine seat, Perez could pose a serious challenge for Colapinto’s spot.

Meanwhile, Bottas has also emerged as a contender for the Cadillac seat. Barretto reports that the Finnish driver and his management have been in contact with the American team. Bottas shares a past connection with Cadillac’s team boss Graeme Lowdon from their time at Sauber, and his experience with Ferrari power units—Cadillac’s chosen engine supplier—could work in his favor.

Bottas, a multiple Grand Prix winner, was a key part of Mercedes’ championship run before moving to Sauber, where he endured a tough 2024 season without scoring a point.

As Cadillac builds its lineup for its debut season, the competition between Perez and Bottas could become one of the biggest storylines of the 2026 driver market.
