SCORPIONS Drum Legend Mikkey Dee Calls Nicko McBrain’s Retirement “Very Unfortunate”

Scorpions drummer Mikkey Dee has labelled the retirement of Nicko McBrain from touring with Iron Maiden as “very unfortunate,” acknowledging the impact of this decision on fans and the heavy metal community.

Dee, known for his work with Motörhead and Scorpions, shared his sentiments in a recent BraveWords article, describing the news of McBrain’s departure as notably regretful  . He recognised McBrain’s profound influence on the metal drumming scene and the challenge of filling his shoes behind the kit.

Nicko McBrain, who joined Iron Maiden in 1982 and held the drum throne for over four decades, announced in December 2024 that he would be “stepping back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle,” with his final show taking place on December 7 in São Paulo   . The 72‑year‑old drummer cited health concerns following a stroke in January 2023, noting that he could no longer give 100% in high‑energy performances  .

The move has sparked a wave of heartfelt tributes from rock luminaries. Rush’s Geddy Lee praised McBrain as “one of the warmest and friendliest dudes”  , while Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy expressed how emotionally difficult the decision must have been for the drummer  . Their sentiments echo Dee’s own reflections, underscoring the significance of McBrain’s exit from the touring stage.

Despite concluding his performances with Iron Maiden, McBrain remains active with the band, contributing to studio projects and continuing his entrepreneurial ventures like the British Drum Company and Rock‑N‑Roll Ribs   . His legacy endures not just in Iron Maiden’s iconic discography but also in the generations of drummers he has inspired.

As Mikkey Dee notes, McBrain’s retirement from touring is a loss for fans worldwide—but his influence and spirit remain very much alive.
