Fernando Alonso Offers Candid Assessment of Lewis Hamilton’s Tough Transition to Ferrari.

Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso has weighed in on Lewis Hamilton’s rocky start to life at Ferrari, offering a blunt yet honest evaluation of his former teammate’s early-season performance struggles.

Hamilton’s much-anticipated switch from Mercedes to the iconic Italian team ahead of the 2025 season was heralded as a potential career revival for the seven-time world champion. However, ten races into the campaign, the move has failed to live up to the hype. Hamilton has yet to reach the podium, and Ferrari’s performance has left many questioning the wisdom of his high-profile transfer.

The British driver had hoped that leaving behind Mercedes—where he endured several uncompetitive seasons—would spark a resurgence in form. Instead, he’s been consistently outpaced by teammate Charles Leclerc and has shown visible signs of frustration throughout the season.

Speaking to media after finishing just behind Hamilton at the Canadian Grand Prix, Alonso expressed surprise at the Ferrari driver’s ongoing struggles. “What’s wrong with him? I have no idea,” Alonso admitted in Montreal. “Lewis is a great driver, he’s capable of exploiting all his strengths. After 24 races, we’ll do the math. He’s struggling now, but he can turn things around very quickly.”

Alonso, who partnered Hamilton during their tense stint at McLaren in 2007, stopped short of criticizing him outright but did question the consistency of his performances when compared to teammate George Russell during their shared time at Mercedes.

“I don’t think the situation has changed much compared to last year with Russell,” Alonso noted. “Then, the Mercedes was apparently difficult to drive and Russell was more comfortable. This year seems to be the same.”

The Aston Martin veteran added that it’s hard to draw firm conclusions without access to all the data and internal dynamics of the Ferrari garage. “It’s difficult to give an opinion without having all the information,” he said.

Hamilton’s only notable success so far came at the Imola Grand Prix, where he managed to finish ahead of Leclerc. He also crossed the line ahead of his teammate in China, but both drivers were disqualified post-race, nullifying the result.

Now sitting sixth in the drivers’ standings with 79 points, Hamilton is under increasing pressure to deliver. With the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring on the horizon, the Ferrari star faces mounting questions about whether he can recapture his former form—or if his move to Maranello has been a misstep.

Speculation continues to swirl around his future, with some commentators suggesting that if the tide doesn’t turn soon, Hamilton may consider stepping away from the sport altogether. For now, though, the seven-time world champion remains focused on finding answers—and proving the doubters wrong.
