Lando Norris Slams Max Verstappen After Tense Monza Battle

The rivalry between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris reignited at the Italian Grand Prix, with the McLaren driver branding the four-time world champion an “idiot” following a dramatic opening-lap clash. Although the two drivers have not locked horns as regularly in 2025 compared to last season, Monza provided the stage for fresh tension between the pair.

Qualifying had already set up the confrontation. Verstappen surprised many by grabbing pole position on Saturday, defying expectations that McLaren’s superior pace would dominate at the Temple of Speed. That left fans anticipating fireworks when the lights went out on Sunday – and they were not left disappointed.

Norris made the stronger start and immediately began to challenge Verstappen heading into the first corner. But in the process, Verstappen forced his former title rival onto the grass. Moments later, the Dutchman lost control under braking at the chicane and cut across the corner. Perhaps mindful of how the stewards might react, Verstappen chose to hand the lead back to Norris soon after.

Ultimately, the gesture made little difference to the outcome. Once Verstappen regained his rhythm, he quickly closed the gap and retook the lead with ease. From there, he pulled away comfortably to secure victory, underlining his relentless race pace despite McLaren’s dominance over the season.

Norris, however, was seething over the early flashpoint. Over team radio, his frustration was plain as he labelled Verstappen an “idiot” for the aggressive move that pushed him wide. Although he spoke more cautiously in television interviews after the race, his irritation could not be fully masked.

That frustration came out again in private moments during the cooldown room. Watching the replay of the chaotic start, Norris turned to teammate Oscar Piastri and remarked: “You won’t get a penalty for that, will you?” Piastri remained silent, but the comment revealed Norris’s belief that Verstappen should have been punished for his actions.

Many observers noted that Verstappen’s decision to give the place back may have spared him an FIA penalty. By surrendering the lead immediately, he effectively neutralized the advantage gained from cutting the chicane. Still, for Norris, the incident represented reckless driving that went beyond acceptable hard racing.

The controversy carried over into the post-race atmosphere. When Norris stepped onto the podium, the crowd at Monza made their feelings clear by loudly booing the McLaren driver. The reception for Verstappen, by contrast, was strikingly different. The Dutchman was cheered throughout the ceremony and even serenaded during the playing of his national anthem, highlighting the divided loyalties among the fans.

The incident adds another layer to the evolving dynamic between Norris and Verstappen. Their fierce battles during the 2024 season created one of F1’s most compelling rivalries, and although 2025 has seen fewer direct confrontations, Monza showed that the competitive fire still burns between them.

For Verstappen, the win keeps him in the hunt for the championship despite McLaren’s points advantage. For Norris, however, the Italian Grand Prix will be remembered less for his podium finish and more for his frustration at being muscled aside by his rival. With several races still to come, the stage is set for more fireworks between the pair as the season reaches its climax.
