Aston Martin clarify Alonso’s retirement after Italian GP heartbreak
Aston Martin have released a detailed statement explaining the reasons behind Fernando Alonso’s unfortunate retirement from the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The two-time Formula 1 world champion was forced to end his race prematurely on lap 24 of 53, following a sudden suspension failure. The incident cut short what had been shaping up to be another valuable points finish for the Spaniard, who has repeatedly seen his efforts undone by reliability setbacks this season.
According to the team’s post-race investigation, Alonso’s problems stemmed from the very first lap. Aston Martin revealed that gravel scattered onto the track during the hectic opening moments of the race struck his AMR25 in several critical areas, including the suspension. This early damage went undetected at the time, but as the race progressed, the constant loading on the weakened part eventually caused it to break.
“The team can confirm that some gravel hit Fernando’s car on the first lap of the race in multiple areas, including the suspension, which compromised the part,” Aston Martin explained in their official statement. “The team were unaware of the damage sustained. Low-level, continuous loading caused the eventual failure.”
Before the failure forced him into retirement, Alonso had looked set for another strong showing in the midfield battle. Running in seventh place, the veteran driver was well-positioned to score six championship points, which would have been crucial both for his own tally and Aston Martin’s Constructors’ standings hopes.
Clearly frustrated after the race, Alonso admitted it was yet another case of bad luck derailing a well-executed drive. “It was very frustrating, because we were into seventh place I think,” he said. “To secure seventh place would have meant another six points for the championship, and we lost again. I remember Monaco, retiring with an engine problem while in P6, and today suspension problem while in P7. The luck is definitely not with us this year, and we are losing a lot of points.”
Despite the disappointment, the Spaniard also took some positives from the race, pointing to the team’s execution and strategy. He made strong progress early on, overtaking Mercedes junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli at the start and later getting ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto during the pit stop phase. “Everything was looking good,” he said. “It is frustrating, but I’m getting used to it unfortunately.”
This latest retirement adds to a growing list of missed opportunities for Alonso in 2025. Mechanical failures and unexpected issues have repeatedly struck just as he looked on course for points. The situation has limited his ability to build momentum in the championship fight, leaving Aston Martin searching for more reliability heading into the second half of the season.
However, the team remain optimistic that the Monza setback was a one-off incident rather than a sign of deeper concerns with the AMR25’s suspension design. With the next round taking place in Baku at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, both Alonso and the team are eager to put the disappointment behind them and return to scoring points.
For Aston Martin, ensuring that Alonso can maximize results will be vital, especially with the midfield pack proving closer than ever this season. With luck and reliability on their side, they believe more consistent top-10 finishes are still achievable.
