F1 News Today: Trident Confirm Double Driver Switch as Rising Stars Step in for Azerbaijan Grand Prix

A surprising shake-up has been confirmed ahead of this weekend’s Formula 2 action in Baku, as Trident Motorsport revealed that both of their regular drivers will be stepping aside for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Italian outfit has named two new rookies — Martinius Stenshorne and Laurens van Hoepen — who will be making their competitive Formula 2 debuts on the streets of the Azerbaijani capital.

The announcement comes just as the Formula 1 paddock prepares for the 17th round of the 2025 World Championship, with McLaren’s driver duo still locked in a close battle in the points standings. Yet in the feeder series, it is Trident who will draw attention after making the bold decision to hand their seats to two young prospects fresh from the FIA Formula 3 Championship.

Both Stenshorne and Van Hoepen wrapped up their sophomore F3 campaigns earlier this month at Monza. The Norwegian, Stenshorne, drove for ART Grand Prix throughout the season, while Dutchman Van Hoepen represented Hitech TGR. Each impressed at different points of the year, with Stenshorne particularly standing out thanks to two race victories and three podium finishes, results that helped him secure a highly regarded move to Formula 2.

For 19-year-old Stenshorne, this promotion marks a milestone moment in a career that has been steadily gathering pace. Speaking after the news broke, the young racer said he was both humbled and excited by the opportunity:

“I’m very proud to be joining Trident Motorsport for the next round of the FIA Formula 2 Championship in Baku. This is a very special opportunity, and I can’t wait to get out on track with the team at such a unique and demanding circuit. I’ll give everything I have and aim to learn as much as possible from the experience.”

His new teammate Van Hoepen, who also enjoyed a strong year in F3, echoed his enthusiasm. The Dutch driver admitted that while the challenge would be enormous, it is precisely the kind of test he has been preparing for as he eyes a long-term career in the upper ranks of motorsport.

“I’m really looking forward to making my FIA Formula 2 debut with Trident Motorsport. It’s a fantastic chance to step into the next category at such a technical and spectacular circuit like Baku. The knowledge I gain here will be something I can build on for the future.”

Trident’s team manager Giacomo Ricci expressed confidence in the decision, praising the potential and determination of both drivers. At the same time, he acknowledged the difficulties they will face, with neither driver having experience in an F2 machine or on Baku’s notoriously tricky street circuit.

“We are delighted to welcome Laurens van Hoepen and Martinius Stenshorne into the team. They are two drivers of outstanding ability and great promise, both of whom have consistently proven themselves as frontrunners this season and in previous campaigns. Making their debut in Baku will undoubtedly be a challenge, but we are committed to preparing them fully for the weekend. At the same time, we would like to thank Sami Meguetounif and Max Esterson for their efforts with us, and we wish them every success in their careers.”

The move signals a new chapter for Trident Motorsport, who are looking to the future by providing opportunities for the next generation of talent. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix, known for its high-speed straights, tight corners, and unpredictable races, will serve as a formidable proving ground for both rookies.

While results may not be the immediate focus, all eyes will be on how Stenshorne and Van Hoepen adapt to the demands of Formula 2 machinery and the unforgiving streets of Baku. For two drivers eager to climb the motorsport ladder, this unexpected chance could be the launchpad toward bigger opportunities in the seasons ahead.
