F1 2025 Singapore Grand Prix Starting Grid Confirmed After Double Disqualification Drama
The FIA has officially confirmed the final starting grid for the 2025 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix following a dramatic series of disqualifications and penalties that reshaped the lineup just hours before lights out. What began as a routine qualifying session under Marina Bay’s dazzling night sky quickly turned into a regulatory storm involving multiple teams — most notably Williams and Alpine — leaving the grid looking very different from Saturday’s provisional results.
Mercedes’ George Russell will start Sunday’s race from pole position after delivering a spectacular qualifying performance. The Briton outpaced his rivals with a composed and precise lap, mastering the heat and humidity of the Singapore circuit. Max Verstappen, who looked strong early in the session, was forced to abandon his final flying lap due to an untimely encounter with a slow-moving Lando Norris in the final sector. The Red Bull star had to settle for second on the grid, narrowly missing out on what could have been his fifth pole of the season.
Norris’ misfortune did not end there — despite showing flashes of pace throughout qualifying, the McLaren driver could only manage fifth place. His teammate Oscar Piastri, meanwhile, put together a clean and commanding performance, securing third on the grid and keeping his title hopes alive. Between the McLarens sits Mercedes’ teenage prodigy Kimi Antonelli, who impressed yet again by posting the fourth-fastest time. The young Italian continues to showcase his growing confidence and control, proving himself a consistent threat among the sport’s elite.
Ferrari also made headlines in qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc locking out the third row in sixth and seventh respectively. Hamilton, donning his distinctive golden helmet, extracted every ounce of performance from his Ferrari SF-25 despite balance issues in the middle sector. Leclerc, meanwhile, looked competitive but admitted that he struggled with rear grip in the final run. Both Ferrari drivers are well-positioned to capitalize on any chaos ahead — a frequent hallmark of the Singapore Grand Prix.
Just behind them, Isack Hadjar delivered an eye-catching qualifying effort for Racing Bulls, lining up eighth — the Frenchman’s best starting position so far this season. Ollie Bearman in the Haas continued to impress by claiming ninth, while veteran Fernando Alonso rounds out the top ten for Aston Martin, determined to fight back into the points after a string of tough races.
However, much of the post-qualifying spotlight fell on Williams, after both of their drivers — Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz — were found in breach of the technical regulations. The FIA stewards confirmed that both Williams cars had rear wings that did not comply with the sporting regulations, resulting in disqualification from qualifying. Initially, Albon and Sainz were slated to start from P12 and P13, but the ruling demoted them to the very back of the grid.
The problems didn’t stop there for Albon. On Sunday morning, Williams announced that they had made suspension changes to his car while it was under parc fermé conditions — a move that automatically triggered a pit lane start. The Thai-British driver will therefore begin the race from the pit lane, joining Pierre Gasly of Alpine, whose team opted to replace both the floor and the suspension setup on his A525. Both teams cited performance and safety reasons for the last-minute modifications, though the decisions will make their race strategies significantly more challenging.
As confirmed by the FIA, Carlos Sainz retains his spot at the back of the grid alongside the two pit lane starters, with permission granted for both disqualified Williams drivers to take part in the race despite their qualifying exclusions.
