has revealed a remarkable tale involving luxury, power, and an unexpected twist of loyalty — the time controversial team boss Flavio Briatore had his yacht seized by authorities, only to get it back through an astonishing turn of events.
Ecclestone, now 95, shared the story during an interview with German newspaper Bild, reflecting on his long life in the sport and the few people he considered true friends. As he described them, there were only “four real friends” he ever had — men who shaped Formula One history in different ways. Among them were the late Jochen Rindt, Formula One’s only posthumous world champion; Niki Lauda, the fearless Austrian icon; and Max Mosley, the highly controversial former FIA president. The only one still alive today, Ecclestone noted, is Flavio Briatore.
Briatore’s name has long been associated with glamour and controversy. The Italian businessman rose to prominence as a team principal with Benetton and later Renault, overseeing world championships with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. But his career has also been clouded by scandal, most notably the infamous “Crashgate” episode, which ultimately led to his ban from Formula One for several years.
It was during this turbulent period that Briatore’s troubles extended beyond the racetrack. According to Ecclestone, authorities confiscated Briatore’s luxury yacht — a move that symbolised just how far the powerful team boss had fallen from grace. For a man used to commanding paddocks and parties alike, losing such a prized possession was a serious blow.
What followed, however, was far from ordinary.
Rather than accepting the situation, Briatore found an unlikely lifeline in his friendship with Ecclestone. The former F1 chief, renowned for his behind-the-scenes influence and razor-sharp instincts, became involved in a process that would eventually see the yacht returned. Ecclestone did not go into every legal detail, but he hinted that the recovery came through a highly unconventional route — one that only someone deeply connected and fiercely loyal could navigate.
The episode highlighted a side of Formula One rarely seen by fans: the tight-knit relationships that exist beyond the headlines. For all the rivalries, politics, and power struggles, Ecclestone suggested that personal loyalty often outweighed public controversy. His willingness to stand by Briatore, even when the Italian was at his lowest point, spoke volumes about the bond they shared.
Ecclestone’s reflections also carried a sense of nostalgia. As he spoke about his four closest friends, there was an unmistakable tone of loss. Rindt, Lauda, and Mosley are all gone, leaving Briatore as the last living link to an era when Formula One was far more intimate, dangerous, and driven by personalities rather than corporate structures.
The yacht story, while seemingly trivial, serves as a metaphor for that era — a time when deals were done through relationships, influence mattered as much as rules, and the sport’s biggest figures lived lives as dramatic off the track as they were on it.
Today’s Formula One is more polished, regulated, and media-conscious. Stories like this feel almost unreal in the modern paddock. Yet Ecclestone’s recollection reminds fans why the sport’s past continues to fascinate: it was unpredictable, controversial, and often unbelievable.
In the end, Briatore getting his yacht back was about more than luxury. It was about friendship, loyalty, and the unique power dynamics that once defined Formula One. And as Ecclestone looks back on his life in the sport, tales like this ensure that the legends of F1’s old guard will never truly fade.
