Mercedes Dominate Qualifying as Russell and Antonelli Lock Out Front Row for 2026 Australian Grand Prix
The starting grid for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix has produced several major surprises, highlighted by a commanding performance from Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. The Silver Arrows secured a front-row lockout after George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli delivered exceptional laps during qualifying at Albert Park Circuit.
In what marked the first qualifying session of Formula 1’s new technical era, Mercedes showcased the true potential of their W17 challenger. Russell produced a brilliant lap to secure pole position, while Antonelli continued his impressive debut season by qualifying second. The result gives Mercedes the perfect opportunity to begin the 2026 Formula One campaign from the strongest possible position.
The pace advantage enjoyed by Mercedes was clear throughout the session. Isack Hadjar, representing Red Bull Racing, delivered an impressive performance to qualify third. However, the young driver was still nearly eight-tenths of a second slower than Russell’s pole time, underlining just how dominant Mercedes appeared in Melbourne.
Behind the top three, Charles Leclerc placed his Scuderia Ferrari machine in fourth position. The Monegasque driver showed encouraging pace for Ferrari and will share the third row with Australian star Oscar Piastri, who thrilled local fans by qualifying fifth for McLaren.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris will start from sixth place. Despite entering the weekend as one of the favourites following his dominant 2025 championship campaign, Norris and McLaren were unable to match the outright pace displayed by Mercedes during qualifying.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, now racing in Ferrari colours, secured seventh place on the grid. Although the British driver produced a consistent performance, he was unable to challenge the leading group for a higher starting position.
Several young drivers further down the grid also impressed with strong qualifying performances. Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad delivered excellent laps for Racing Bulls, finishing eighth and ninth respectively. Meanwhile, Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten for Audi Formula 1 Team, marking a promising start for the German manufacturer’s new project in Formula 1.
The biggest headline of the session, however, involved four-time world champion Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver will start from the very back of the grid after crashing during the opening phase of qualifying. Reports suggested the incident was triggered by a technical problem on his car, which caused him to lose control and end his session prematurely. As a result, Verstappen faces the enormous challenge of fighting his way through the field during Sunday’s race.
Elsewhere, veteran driver Fernando Alonso endured a difficult qualifying session for Aston Martin F1 Team, finishing 17th. Despite the disappointing result, the Spaniard still managed to qualify ahead of the drivers representing the newly introduced Cadillac Formula 1 Team. Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas will start near the back of the grid as the team begins its debut season in the sport.
Other notable names lower down the order include Carlos Sainz, now driving for Williams Racing, and Lance Stroll of Aston Martin. Both drivers will have significant work to do if they hope to move up the order during the race.
With Mercedes showing early dominance, Ferrari and McLaren eager to challenge, and Verstappen facing a difficult recovery drive from the back, the stage is set for an exciting and unpredictable season opener in Melbourne. The grid, however, will remain provisional until it receives official confirmation from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.
