“Where the Hell Did That Come From?” – Lewis Hamilton Stunned by Mercedes Pace at Australian Grand Prix

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was left both surprised and excited after Mercedes showed unexpected speed during the early sessions of the Australian Grand Prix at the iconic Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne.

The British driver could barely hide his shock when the timing screens revealed the pace of the Mercedes car during practice and qualifying simulations. After a difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season and modest expectations heading into the weekend, Hamilton admitted that the sudden performance boost caught the entire team off guard.

Speaking to reporters after the session, Hamilton laughed in disbelief and said, “Honestly, I was asking the engineers on the radio, ‘Where the hell did that come from?’ The car suddenly felt alive. It was gripping, it was responsive, and it felt like we had taken a big step forward overnight.”

Unexpected Pace from Mercedes

Coming into the race weekend, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team was not considered one of the favourites. Teams like Red Bull Racing and Ferrari were widely expected to dominate the front of the grid.

However, Mercedes surprised both fans and rivals when their car showed strong pace in sector times around Albert Park. Hamilton consistently placed near the top of the timing sheets, while his teammate George Russell also reported improved balance and stability in the car.

The sudden improvement has raised questions about whether Mercedes may have unlocked a new setup direction that allows the car to perform better on medium-speed street circuits like Melbourne.

Hamilton explained that the car felt completely different compared to previous races.

“From the first lap, I could feel something had changed. The rear end felt planted, the front responded exactly when I needed it, and tyre degradation looked much better than before,” he said. “It’s still early, but the signs are promising.”

A Welcome Boost for Hamilton

For Hamilton, the improvement comes at a crucial moment. The veteran driver has been chasing another world championship after narrowly missing out on the title in the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Although he remains one of the most experienced drivers on the grid, the last few seasons have been challenging as Mercedes struggled to match the dominance of rivals.

The unexpected pace in Australia could therefore provide a psychological boost not only for Hamilton but also for the entire team.

“Confidence is everything in this sport,” Hamilton said. “When the car works with you instead of against you, it changes the way you drive. Today I felt like I could push harder and trust the car.”

Rivals Take Notice

Mercedes’ improved performance did not go unnoticed in the paddock. Drivers from other teams acknowledged that the silver cars suddenly looked more competitive than expected.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull reportedly kept a close eye on the Mercedes lap times after dominating much of the early season. Meanwhile, Ferrari drivers were also cautious about the possibility that Mercedes might have found extra performance.

One team engineer from a rival outfit commented anonymously that Mercedes’ pace “came out of nowhere” and could signal a major development breakthrough.

“Sometimes one small change in setup or aerodynamics can transform a car,” the engineer said. “If Mercedes has found that sweet spot, they could become serious contenders again.”

The Challenge Ahead

Despite the encouraging performance, Hamilton warned that the team must remain realistic. Practice and qualifying simulations do not always translate directly into race results.

Albert Park’s street circuit layout is known for producing unpredictable races, with safety cars, tyre strategies, and changing track conditions often playing a decisive role.

“We have to stay calm and keep working,” Hamilton said. “One good session doesn’t mean we’ve solved everything. But it definitely shows we’re moving in the right direction.”

Mercedes engineers are now focusing on refining the setup ahead of race day, hoping to maintain the pace that shocked the paddock.

Fans Hope for a Comeback

For Formula 1 fans around the world, the possibility of a resurgent Mercedes and a competitive Hamilton is exciting news. A strong showing in Australia could reignite the championship battle and add another thrilling chapter to Hamilton’s legendary career.

As the lights prepare to go out in Melbourne, one question remains on everyone’s mind: was Mercedes’ sudden speed a one-off surprise, or the beginning of a true comeback?

If Hamilton’s reaction is anything to go by, even the team itself is still trying to figure out the answer.

“One thing’s for sure,” Hamilton said with a smile. “I’m not complaining.”
