FIA Investigation Concludes as Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team Keeps Hard-Fought Melbourne Triumph
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team have officially retained their victory at the Australian Grand Prix after an investigation by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) concluded without altering the race result.
Mercedes enjoyed a dominant start to the 2026 Formula 1 season in Melbourne, with British driver George Russell leading the team to victory in the season opener. The performance marked a significant statement from the Silver Arrows as the sport entered a new era under sweeping technical regulations.
Investigation sparked by qualifying incident
Despite the celebrations, Mercedes’ weekend briefly came under scrutiny after a qualifying incident involving teammate Kimi Antonelli. During the final stages of qualifying at the Albert Park Circuit, Antonelli’s car was released from the garage with a cooling fan still attached to the sidepod duct.
The component later detached on track, scattering debris and triggering a red flag after another driver struck part of the equipment. The incident prompted FIA stewards to launch an investigation into whether the car had been released in an unsafe condition, potentially breaching Formula 1 sporting regulations.
FIA verdict delivered
After reviewing evidence including team radio communications, onboard footage, and technical data, the FIA stewards concluded that the incident did not warrant a sporting penalty that would affect Mercedes’ race result.
Instead, the team received a financial penalty of €7,500 for releasing the car in an unsafe condition. Crucially, the sanction had no impact on the grid positions or the outcome of the race, meaning Mercedes’ front-row lockout and subsequent victory remained intact.
Mercedes dominance confirmed
With the investigation resolved, Mercedes’ performance in Melbourne stands as one of the strongest starts to a season in recent years. Russell converted his pole position into victory, while Antonelli’s strong showing underlined the team’s competitive edge in the early stages of the 2026 championship.
The win also highlighted the effectiveness of Mercedes’ new-generation car under the sport’s revised power unit and chassis regulations, which have reshaped the competitive order across the grid.
Focus shifts to the rest of the season
Team principal Toto Wolff and the Mercedes squad can now turn their attention fully to the championship battle, with the Melbourne result providing early momentum in both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings.
However, with rivals including Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren expected to bring rapid development upgrades in the coming races, the battle at the front of the grid is likely to intensify quickly.
For now, though, Mercedes leave Australia with both the victory and the confirmation that their triumph will stand—ending any uncertainty surrounding the investigation and cementing a powerful start to their 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
