The FIA have delivered their verdict following a Mercedes-related incident during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, confirming that no penalty will be imposed on rookie driver Kimi Antonelli.
The matter arose during Sprint Qualifying (SQ2) at the Shanghai International Circuit, where Antonelli was alleged to have impeded McLaren’s Lando Norris at Turn 1. Norris, the reigning world champion, initially voiced frustration over team radio, suggesting that he had intended to begin a competitive lap when he encountered the Mercedes emerging onto the circuit.
However, after reviewing the circumstances, race stewards opted not to take further action against Antonelli. A detailed investigation included discussions with both drivers, team representatives, and an examination of video footage, telemetry data, team radio communications, and in-car camera evidence.
Central to the decision was clarification from Norris himself. When summoned by the stewards, the McLaren driver explained that he had been on what he described as a “pushing warm-up lap” rather than a timed push lap. In practical terms, this meant he was preparing his tyres and car for a fast lap but was not yet attempting to set a representative lap time.
Given that distinction, the stewards concluded that Antonelli had not impeded Norris during an official flying lap. As a result, no sporting infringement was deemed to have occurred.
In their official statement, the stewards emphasized that the context of Norris’s lap was crucial to the outcome. They noted that if Norris had been on a genuine push lap at the time Antonelli exited the pit lane and joined the racing line, the situation would likely have constituted unnecessary impeding under the regulations. In such a scenario, a penalty for the Mercedes driver would almost certainly have followed.
The ruling spares Antonelli from what could have been a costly grid penalty during a highly competitive Sprint weekend. For the young Italian, who continues to adapt to the pressures of Formula 1 competition, the decision represents a significant relief.
For Mercedes, the outcome ensures that their on-track performance in Shanghai remains unaffected by disciplinary action. Meanwhile, the incident serves as a reminder of the fine margins involved in qualifying sessions, where timing, track position, and communication can have major consequences.
Ultimately, the FIA’s verdict underscores the importance of precise definitions within Formula 1’s sporting regulations—particularly when it comes to determining what constitutes impeding during different phases of a lap.
